About the town

Mayor Buratovich is a small town, of about 5,000 inhabitants in the southern tip of the Province of Buenos Aires, in the humid plains of the Argentinean Pampas. Its inhabitants are largely European immigrants and the children of those immigrants who arrived by the establishment of the railway network in the early 20th century. It is a rural area that produces, almost exclusively, onions for export.
The new immigrants to the area are Bolivians and migrant workers from the northern Argentinean provinces of Jujuy, Salta, and Santiago del Estero, who work in the fields to harvest the onion. Twenty one percent of the population lives below the level of poverty.
